About the programme

Cervical cancer is one of the cancers that can be effectively prevented by regular screening. Several hundred new cases of this disease are diagnosed in the Czech Republic every year, and early detection significantly increases the chance of a complete cure.

Every woman from the age of 15 is entitled to an annual gynaecological preventive examination, which includes a cervical cytological examination. This examination is fully covered by public health insurance and is carried out by a registered gynaecologist.

From 2021, screening is extended to include HPV testing, which is also covered by public health insurance. Every woman aged 35 and 45, and from 1 January 2024 also 55, is entitled to a free HPV test as part of a preventive gynaecological examination. During the examination, a gynaecologist will take a swab from the cervix and send it to a specialised laboratory where the sample will be analysed for the presence of high-risk types of human papillomavirus (HPV) that can lead to cervical cancer.

The results of the test help the doctor decide what to do next – for example, whether more frequent check-ups or further tests are needed.

Cervical cancer often runs its course without symptoms. It is therefore important not to underestimate prevention and to attend regular gynaecological examinations. Early detection of cervical changes can prevent the development of cancer and save lives.
